Colour, Collage & Change: Spring Art Inspired by Eric Carle @ LAB Art Studios!

We're so excited for our upcoming themes this Spring! 🐛🎨

It's going to be bursting colours at LAB Art Studios! In March and April, our young artists will dive into bold textures, vibrant collages, and the magical transformations inspired by the beloved illustrations of Eric Carle.

Known for his hand-painted papers, layered tissue collages, and nature-inspired storytelling (including the timeless classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar), Carle’s art style is the perfect way to welcome the season of growth and change.

This term is all about expressive colour, playful mark-making, and discovering how art (just like nature) can transform in wonderful ways.

March: Hungry Hungry Me 🐛🍓

March kicks off with a deliciously creative exploration of food, growth, and self-expression. Inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar, students will explore themes of appetite, healthy foods, and storytelling through vibrant collage and mixed media art.

Think juicy strawberries, towering ice cream cones, leafy greens, and silly snack-inspired creatures!

This month, students will:

  • Create textured, hand-painted papers to cut and layer into bold collages

  • Explore colour mixing using bright, joyful palettes

  • Learn about composition and visual storytelling

  • Design their own “hungry” characters and imaginative food journeys

  • Experiment with printmaking techniques to mimic Eric Carle’s signature textures

From tiny caterpillars to imaginative feasts, artists will discover how layering shapes and colour can bring stories to life.

April: Metamorphosis 🦋🌱

April celebrates transformation, growth, and new beginnings with our Metamorphosis theme. As spring blooms around us, students will explore life cycles in nature such as butterflies, frogs, flowers, and beyond, while experimenting with evolving forms in their artwork. Inspired by Eric Carle’s nature illustrations, students will create pieces that reflect change, movement, and imagination.

This month, students will:

  • Study simple life cycles and sketch stages of transformation

  • Create layered butterfly and insect collages

  • Experiment with symmetry, pattern, and bold colour contrast

  • Build 3D or mixed-media artworks that “transform”

  • Reflect on personal growth and express it through visual storytelling

From cocoons to colourful wings, artists will explore how change can be beautiful — both in nature and in themselves.

A Season of Colour, Texture & Growth

Whether your child joins Parent & Me, Mixed Media, Sculpture, Digital Drawing, or Creative Storytelling, our March–April curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, build foundational skills, and encourage creative confidence.

By the end of the season, students will have a vibrant collection of textured collages, imaginative creatures, and transformation-inspired artworks, along with a deeper understanding of colour theory, layering techniques, and storytelling through art.
