At LAB art studio, we offer a diverse range of artsy and academic "Weekly Classes" for children of all ages. These classes happen all year round at our studios in Steveston, Point Grey and Kerrisdale.
What is the Weekly Class structure like?
When you join a "Weekly Class," you'll attend once a week at the same time throughout the course. Each class builds on the previous ones, and by the end of the course, students will have created a complete masterpiece.
Each month's engaging themes showcases an artist and/or art style. This year, we've created New Year pop art inspired by Andy Warhol, painted silly self-portraits in the style of Yoshitomo Nara. We're currently painting food still life like Wayne Thiebaud. Soon, we'll discover Georges Seurat's style, how to curate a modern art museum and learn about landscapes inspired by Marina Ester Castaldo.
Be sure to follow our social media accounts (@lab.artstudio) to see what's coming up next!
What are the different Weekly Class types for my kid(s)?
Our classes are organized into the following age groups: Toddlers (<3), 3-5 years, 6-9 years, and 10+ years. Here's a glimpse of what students create in our various "Weekly Classes":
Alphabet + Art (3-5 years) | Students work through LAB-made worksheets to practice reading and writing, and complete a pencil and watercolour drawing.
Parent + Me Painting (18 months-3 years) | This class explores mediums like canvas painting, pastel drawing, collaging, and clay. The project culminates in a large canvas painting. Parent participation is required.
Mixed Media (3-5 years) | Children explore canvas painting, pastel drawing, collaging, and clay to create a large mixed media canvas project.
Acrylic Painting (3-5, 6-9, 10+ years) | Students work on different layers each week to complete a large acrylic painting on canvas.
Sculpture (3-5, 6-9, 10+ years) | Participants prepare, sculpt, and glaze earthenware clay pieces, fired in our kiln. They also work with polymer clays, air-dry clays, and modelling clays.
Pencil Drawing (6-9, 10+ years) | Students use various pencil and graphite mediums to sketch, outline, and colour, resulting in a large drawing project.
Digital Drawing (6-9, 10+ years) | Using art editing and vector programs on laptops/tablets, students create digital art pieces, which can be emailed to parents or printed out.
Science + Art (6-9, 10+ years) | Children engage with LAB-made worksheets, use various mediums to create thematic projects, often sculptural or dioramas, and conduct experiments.
Needle Felting (6-9, 10+ years) | Students use textiles like wool, felt, and fabric, along with special needles, to create large sculptural pieces, incorporating hand-sewing techniques.
Advanced Art (10+ years) | These classes (Visual or Digital) are more student-led, and will focus solely on art elements and techniques to create a complete composition. Students can also learn to write artist statements to accompany their project. |
What are the benefits of joining the Weekly Classes?
When students join our Weekly Classes, not only do they learn new skills, work on their art techniques, and get inspired by artist styles and art history, they receive their own Portfolio folder (with a Rewards Stamp tracker). At the end of each course, students receive an art report to include in their portfolios! Our reports provide feedback on skills and areas of improvement, while the portfolio folder can contain all their completed projects, allowing them to see their artistic growth over a year. These tools help them keep track of their progress and showcase their accomplishments.
Students collect a stamp for every Weekly Class course complete, and receive discounts for future classes when they complete multiple courses!
Can I register my kid(s) in multiple Weekly Classes in the same month?
Students can enrol in multiple "Weekly Classes." While the themes may be the same, the projects and skills learned will differ significantly. If a child takes two of the same type of class (e.g., Acrylic Painting), our instructors will tailor the lessons to encourage creativity and variation in their projects.
Are there one-time trial classes available?
You can register for a "Drop-in" class, priced between $38-74 depending on the class type, to try a class and see if your child(ren) like it! Drop-in students may not complete a project in one session, but if they decide to continue, we can help with registration for the full course.
What if I miss a class?
If you can't attend a class, inform our instructors as soon as possible. We can arrange a free 15-minute make-up class before the next session or reschedule to another class time at an additional cost. Note that make-up classes are subject to availability and cannot be accumulated, carried over, or refunded.
At LAB, we strive to ensure that every student completes their projects and enjoys a rich, creative learning experience. Join us and watch your child’s creativity and skills blossom!
