Colour Wheels and Rainbow Cities Inspired by Hilma Af Klint @ LAB Art Studios!

May is arriving at LAB Art Studios, and following closely we’ll be heading straight toward the warmth and energy of summer with June!

New months mean  fresh themes for our weekly classes, and a new artist to inspire our creative journey.

This term, we’re excited to explore the work of Hilma af Klint, diving into her unique use of colour, shape, and symbolic abstract expression. She was born in 1862 in Sweden, she went to art school, and made a lot of art would have inspired the famous artists, Mr. Kandinsky and Mr. Mondrian! Not a lot of people knew about her art until she passed away unfortunately. She kept her work very hush-hush and kept a nice private life. When people discovered all her paintings, they considered Hilma af Klint to be a pioneer of abstract art!

Let's see what we're creating the in the next couple months!

Colour wheels, colour wheels, colour wheels! Colour wheels are a very important foundation to be familiar with. They are your go-to guide for mixing, matching and making artwork pop off your canvas and draw the eyes of viewers. Whether you are painting, drawing, colouring or anything in between, colour wheels will be by your side. Students will:

  • Learn and understand primary, secondary, and tertiary colours and how they relate on the colour wheel

  • Practice mixing colours to create new shades, tints, and tones

  • Explore colour relationships (complementary, analogous, warm vs. cool) and how they affect a composition

  • Apply colour theory in a final artwork to create contrast, balance, and visual interest

Have you ever wanted to live in a city with less shades of grey and more delicious colours? Well maybe joining our weekly classes in June will be the right place for bringing that dream to life. If you plan on joining us in May also, this would be a great wombo-combo for true deep diving into colour work and experimenting with structures, unfamiliar composition and geometry.  Students will:

  • Design imaginative buildings using bold colours and creative shapes

  • Experiment with composition by arranging structures in dynamic, playful layouts

  • Explore how colour choices can create mood, depth, and visual storytelling in a city scene

  • Combine geometry and perspective to build a cohesive and vibrant “rainbow city” artwork

Together, we’ll create vibrant abstract compositions, imaginative rainbow cities, and expressive colour wheels that explore geometry, emotion, and meaning. We’ll be experimenting beyond what we see every day, pushing boundaries, embracing intuition and mystery, and letting colour lead the way. Embracing the unknown and thinking outside of the box are features of great artists and creators that help keep them all creating and connecting to unique parts of the world and our minds!
