Hi LAB Fam! Starting tomorrow, we celebrate Mid Autumn Festival with some really fun and creative art projects at LAB Studios!
We love to fill our space with vibrant colours, creative energies, and a deep sense of community each year during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
This auspicious occasion holds great significance to our Chinese-Canadian community, offering a unique opportunity to celebrate age-old traditions while embracing art and creativity.
We invite all ages, kids and adults to come paint mooncakes, draw our family feasts and sculpt mini lanterns with us at LAB Art Studios, and discover the rich cultural tapestry that is woven together in our city.
Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is an ancient Chinese tradition that falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. Celebrated for over 3,000 years, this festival carries a deep cultural and spiritual significance. It is a time to pay homage to the moon, which is believed to be at its fullest and brightest on this night, symbolizing unity and family togetherness.
For the Chinese Canadian community in Vancouver, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a cherished occasion that allows them to reconnect with their cultural roots, bridging the gap between generations and fostering a sense of belonging in a foreign land.
One of the most cherished traditions my family does during the Mid-Autumn Festival is the sharing of mooncakes. These round, delicately crafted pastries come in a variety of flavours and are often gifted as a symbol of unity and togetherness. At LAB, it is always great to discuss what traditions our families have during this time of year, and create meaningful paintings together.
When I worked in Hong Kong for a short while, another cherished tradition I saw my family and friends honour is the lighting of lanterns. In the past, lanterns were lit to signify the harvest season. Today, they symbolize hope and blessings. At LAB, we want to change things up a bit and create a decorative lantern out of air dry clay.
Mid-Autumn Festival is a perfect opportunity for families to bond through creative endeavours. Our family-friendly art projects allow parents and children to work side by side, creating beautiful art pieces inspired by this special occasion. Our studios provide a welcoming space for families to spend quality time together.
