Hello dreamers,
This summer, from July 29th to August 2nd, let your child unlock the doors to imagination and creativity at our Surrealism-focused theme for kids aged 3 to 15.
Located in the scenic areas of Steveston Richmond, Kerrisdale, and Point Grey in Vancouver, our camp invites young artists to explore the enchanting and thought-provoking world of Surrealism. This art movement, known for its visual oddities and dream-like scenes, provides the perfect backdrop for a week filled with innovative art-making, learning, and discovery.
Diving Deep into Surrealism
This week’s curriculum is designed to immerse students in the techniques and concepts of Surrealism, encouraging them to think outside the bounds of reality and express their inner visions through various forms of art. Artist studies include: Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Max Ernst, Joan Miro and Frida Kahlo!
Painting Studies: Our students will delve into Surrealist techniques such as 'automatism' (random doodles), 'frottage' (rubbing impressions), and 'decalcomania' (engraving + printing on other surfaces), which encourage spontaneity and utilize unexpected textures and forms. They will create their own Surrealist paintings, inspired by masters like Salvador Dalà and René Magritte, learning how to tap into their subconscious to drive their artistic choices.
Sculpture Hand-Building: In these sessions, children will use a mix of traditional and unconventional materials to construct three-dimensional artworks that defy ordinary perceptions and evoke a sense of mystery and intrigue. These activities will help campers understand the physicality of the objects while transforming them into something entirely new and abstract.
Fine Arts Drawing Techniques: Our drawing classes will focus on surreal techniques and subjects, pushing campers to explore the boundaries of their imagination. They will learn to draw from dreams and play with perspective to create compelling and surreal imagery.
Textile/Multimedia Arts: Integrating textiles with multimedia elements, students will work on projects that combine different materials to create unique, textured works of art that stimulate both the touch and the visual senses, embodying the surrealists' love for the unconventional.
Science and Art Exploration: Science will meet Surrealism as campers engage in activities that make them question their perceptions of reality. Exploring optical illusions and psychological experiments, they will learn how our minds interpret visual information, enriching their understanding of how art can alter perception.
Creative Story Writing and Reading: Inspired by the narrative potential of Surrealist art, children will be guided through creative writing exercises that encourage them to construct stories as boundless as the artworks they create. This segment helps develop their abilities to think creatively and articulate their thoughts in exciting and novel ways.
