Summer Camps Week 5 July 22-26

During July 22nd to July 26th of our summer art camp program, young artists aged 3 to 15 are invited to explore the dynamic world of urban landscapes at ourĀ Urban Art Explorers summer camp.

Set in the diverse locales of Steveston Richmond, Kerrisdale, and Point Grey in Vancouver, our camp offers a creative foray into the heart of city life through art. Children will capture the essence of urban environments in their creations, from bustling street scenes to serene park views.

Crafting Cityscapes: Artistic Adventures in the Urban Jungle

Urban landscapes offer a rich tapestry of visuals for artistic expression. We'll be studying the works of Gary Nay from Vancouver, George Bellows from USA, Camille Pissarro from European Isles, Katsushika Hokusai from Japan and Edward Hopper, famous for "Nighthawks" painting to create our own. This camp focuses on the various elements that define urban life, using them as a foundation for a broad range of artistic activities:

  • Painting Studies: Students will learn how to depict urban settings, from towering skyscrapers to shadowy alleyways. They will explore different painting techniques to effectively convey the mood and atmosphere of city life, focusing on aspects like lighting, reflection, and colour dynamics.

  • Sculpture Hand-Building: Using materials such as clay, wire, and recycled components, we will construct three-dimensional models of urban features. Whether it's a detailed city skyline or an abstract interpretation of urban sprawl, these projects encourage a deeper understanding of form and space.

  • Fine Arts Drawing Techniques: Precision and perspective play crucial roles in drawing urban landscapes. Our instructors will guide the children through the complexities of architectural drawing, teaching them how to create depth and realism in their sketches of buildings and city scenes.

  • Textile/Multimedia Arts: The textures of a cityā€”brick, asphalt, glassā€”are as varied as their structures. Campers will merge textiles and other materials to craft artworks that reflect the diverse surfaces and sights of urban environments. These projects enhance tactile skills and encourage innovative thinking.

  • Science and Art Exploration: The interplay of science and art is evident in urban settings, where geometry, physics, and environmental science converge. Students will engage in activities that explore these aspects, such as studying the physics of skyscraper construction or the environmental impact of urban areas.

  • Creative Story Writing and Reading: Inspired by the narratives that unfold daily in city streets, campers will write and share stories set in urban landscapes. This not only hones their writing skills but also helps them understand the human elements that pulse through the veins of every city.
